What to do if your computer is hacked
Protecting RGC from a cybersecurity breach is the responsibility of every employee. If you see any of the following signs, your computer or device has been infected:
- The cursor is moving on its own
- Programs are starting and operating by themselves
- You can’t get your computer to respond, but it’s still being operated
- A message is displayed stating that your device is infected with ransomware or your data is encrypted
If you find or suspect that your device has been infected with a virus or malware, you must take swift action. Every second counts.
-
IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF your computer or device
- If you’re using a laptop, PRESS AND HOLD the power button for several seconds until the unit completely shuts down
- If you’re using a PC, select SHUT DOWN
- Leave it off until you get the go-ahead from IT
-
CONTACT IT as soon as possible via phone call at 334-703-2774.
- You will need to describe what you saw before you shut down.
- If I don’t answer, leave a message so that I may return your call with the urgency this situation requires AND immediately call Higher Ground Technology at 901-333-7777.
Your reaction time could be important to the company. The damage might be contained if you act quickly. Right now, make a mental note of what you’ll need to do so that you’re prepared if this happens to you. Please contact me if you have questions or need further guidance.
